About Hanzi Notes
Point at any Chinese word and Hanzi Notes shows its pinyin and meaning instantly. Press S to save it. Each word you save becomes a study note, kept with the sentence you found it in and the page it came from.
LOOK UP WORDS AS YOU READ
• Hover over Chinese text to see pinyin and English meanings
• Finds whole words, not just single characters
• Make the word shorter or longer with ← and →
• Works in articles, subtitles, iframes and most web apps
• Prefer it only on demand? Turn hover off and hold Alt (Option on Mac) instead
SAVE IN ONE KEY
• Press S on the word card, or right-click selected text → "Save to Hanzi Notes"
• The sentence around the word is saved with it, so you remember where you met it
• Each note gets meanings, part of speech, example sentences with pinyin, and a translation of your sentence
READ TEXT IN IMAGES
• Press Alt+Shift+S (Option+Shift+S on Mac) and drag over Chinese text in an image, video or screenshot
• Pick the words you want from the list, or save them all automatically
STUDY ON YOUR PHONE
• Click "Use on my phone" and scan the QR code. Your words appear on your phone
• Add it to your home screen and it opens like an app, even offline
• No sign-up, no email, no password
YOUR WORDS, YOUR WAY
• Export to Anki, CSV or Markdown
• Mark words as new, learning or known; add your own notes and tags
• Simplified or traditional characters; translations in many languages
PRIVACY
Lookups happen on your computer. Nothing leaves the page until you save a word or read a screenshot. When you read a screenshot, only the area you select is sent, and images are never stored. No ads, no tracking.
