The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About cOSMetics for iD
cOSMetics for iD
Custom Layers, Building Assistant, Changeset Comments & Mapping Grids
Mapping with OpenStreetMap’s iD editor? cOSMetics simplifies your workflow with saved custom backgrounds, Overture building assistance, descriptive changeset comments, persistent hashtags and mapping grids.
CUSTOM BACKGROUND LAYERS
Define and save multiple custom background URL templates, then select them from a dedicated panel inside iD. Apply your preferred background with one click, without repeatedly copying and pasting URLs.
Use only imagery whose terms permit use for OpenStreetMap mapping.
OVERTURE BUILDING ASSISTANT
Enable the optional Overture controls and, at zoom 18 or higher, click “Load area” to load building outlines for the displayed area.
Select an outline and press A or click “Add (A)” to add an individual building to your edits. Review each building against imagery and existing OSM data, correcting its shape, position and tags before uploading.
The compact control follows the browser’s light/dark preference. Drag its heading to reposition it; its position is remembered. Moving the map does not load additional buildings automatically: click “Load area” again when needed.
CHANGESET COMMENT SUGGESTER
When saving in iD, click “Suggest” to generate a descriptive comment based on your edits and the current area, such as:
“Created trees, woods, buildings, farmlands + modified highways in Roma area”
Suggestions distinguish created and modified objects and show up to four categories for each, prioritised by object count and then geometry complexity.
Always review, edit or replace the suggested comment before uploading.
PERSISTENT CHANGESET HASHTAG
Set a hashtag in the popup to prefill iD’s standard hashtag field whenever you open the save dialog, including when you write your comment manually.
The hashtag is saved automatically on your device until you change or clear it. Other hashtags are preserved and duplicates are avoided.
GEOJSON MAPPING GRIDS
Generate a grid centred on the current OpenStreetMap map view. Choose from 1 to 10 cells per side and a cell size from 100 to 1000 metres.
Download the GeoJSON file, enter edit mode in iD and drag the file onto the map to display your grid. Grid generation does not create OpenStreetMap objects. Your last grid parameters are remembered.
COMPACT, MULTILINGUAL POPUP
Each feature has a collapsible section that remembers its open/closed state. The Save button remains visible while you scroll through the contents.
The interface supports English, Italian, Slovak, German, French and Spanish. You can also choose to generate suggested comments always in English.

2. At zoom 18 or higher, click “Load area”.
3. Select and add individual buildings, checking each one before uploading.

1. Optionally configure a persistent hashtag in the popup.
2. Make your edits in iD and open the save dialog.
3. Click “Suggest” if you want a proposed comment.
4. Review your comment and hashtags, then upload through iD as usual.

2. Open “Mapping grid” in the popup and choose the grid parameters.
3. Download the GeoJSON and drag it onto the map in iD’s edit mode.
Tip: Press Ctrl+Shift+L in iD to open the location panel and help identify the area name.
PERMISSIONS & PRIVACY
The extension accesses the OpenStreetMap iD editor pages to provide its panels, controls and comment suggestions. Edits are analysed in the browser.
Chrome storage retains your preferences. Custom background settings and some options may sync through Chrome; hashtags, grid parameters, popup section states and the Overture control position are stored locally.
The activeTab permission allows reading the current tab’s URL when you request a mapping grid, to obtain the OpenStreetMap map centre.
Area-name lookup may send map coordinates to Nominatim. Loading Overture buildings requests its public catalog and building tiles for the displayed area. Custom backgrounds contact their respective imagery providers.
The developer does not operate advertising, analytics or tracking systems. cOSMetics does not upload changesets automatically: you review and upload your edits through iD.
LICENSES & SUPPORT
The extension’s code is licensed under MIT. Bundled libraries retain their own licenses, included in the package. Overture building data has separate licensing and attribution requirements, linked from the building control.
cOSMetics is an independent project, not an official OpenStreetMap or Overture product.
