Clean Google Maps

Google Maps drops a full-size pin on every restaurant, shop and saved place. Search a busy street and the pins cover the street. Clean Google Maps makes them smaller, or replaces them with a small coloured dot, so you can see the map underneath. Nothing is removed. Google still decides which places and labels appear. This only changes how a marker is drawn. FOUR STYLES Dots only Every place becomes a small coloured dot with a white ring. The colour is taken from the pin it replaces, so a restaurant stays red and a saved place stays yellow. Icons & Dots Adapts to your zoom. Wide views get dots, because there is no room for artwork when you are looking at a whole region. As you zoom in the real Google icons come back and keep growing until they reach full size. Small icons Keeps Google's real icons, just smaller, at one size everywhere. This is the default, at 50 percent, and it is the only style that uses the size slider. The slider runs from 20 to 90 percent. Google original Changes nothing. This is the off switch, so you can stop the extension without uninstalling it. WHAT STAYS THE SAME Click targets do not move. Markers keep their original dimensions, so taps and clicks land exactly where they did before. Public transport badges, road signs and the place you have currently selected are never touched. They stay Google original in every style. The map canvas, your photos and Google's own interface are never resized. Place names, roads, water, parks and land use are untouched. PRIVACY Two permissions plus the Google Maps sites, and nothing else. activeTab is used only to refresh the Maps tab after you click Save settings. storage is used only to remember your two settings. Site access is limited to Google Maps: google.<tld>/maps and maps.google.<tld>, on every country domain. No other site is requested. The extension makes no network requests of its own. There is no analytics, no telemetry, no account, no remote code and no tracking of any kind. Nothing leaves your browser. The work happens in the tab, on images Google has already sent you. The install prompt lists a lot of sites. That is because Google Maps runs on 187 country domains and Chrome cannot wildcard a top-level domain, so each one has to be listed. It is google.<tld>/maps and nothing else. GOOD TO KNOW Works on every Google Maps country domain, not just google.com. Starred places and saved places are included, and each keeps its own colour. Custom list icons are left as Google draws them. If anything fails it falls back to Google's original marker, so you get a full-size pin rather than a missing one. Requires Chrome 111 or later.
