The Chrome Web Store rounds user counts down to the leading digit, so the user line moves in steps. The ratings count is exact and is the better signal of real adoption.
About Chrome Tab Remote
Chrome Tab Remote gives an AI agent access to exactly one browser tab — the one you chose — and nothing else.
You explicitly grant access from the toolbar icon. The agent can then read that tab (content, structure, interactive
elements) for up to 30 minutes, until the tab navigates to a different site, or until you revoke it.
WHAT THE AGENT CAN DO
• Observe: read the granted tab's content and interactive elements.
• Act (off by default): if you tick "Allow actions" when granting, the agent may request clicks, form fills, or selects.
Every action pauses in the side panel and waits for your explicit approval; denials and timeouts fail closed. Passwords are
always redacted and can never be filled.
• Screenshot (off by default): capture the granted tab's visible viewport on request. It never focuses, scrolls, or
captures full pages.
TRUST MODEL
• One tab at a time, origin-pinned: if the tab navigates to a different site, access is suspended until you explicitly
re-confirm the new origin.
• Revocation is instant: Revoke button, closing the tab, or expiry.
• Everything is audited: grants, reads, actions, and revocations appear live in the side panel and are appended to a local
audit log (~/.chrome-tab-remote/audit.jsonl).
• No tracking, analytics, bundled AI model, or vendor-operated cloud service. Tab data only ever crosses to the local
companion helper's localhost MCP endpoint (http://127.0.0.1:8917/mcp); a user-selected MCP client or AI service may process
or transmit tool results under that service's own settings and terms.
SETUP
The extension is one half of a two-piece setup: this Chrome extension plus a small open-source local companion helper
(Node.js) that exposes the granted tab over localhost via the Model Context Protocol (MCP). The helper is not distributed
through the Chrome Web Store; the helper installer currently supports macOS (other platforms require a manual native-host
manifest, documented in the repository).
PERMISSIONS
• activeTab / tabs — identify the granted tab and verify its origin
• scripting — inject the reader script into the granted tab only
• storage — persist grants, settings, and audit log
• sidePanel — the consent UI
• nativeMessaging — communicate with the local companion helper
• notifications / alarms — surface action approvals and reconnect the helper
• http://*/* and https://*/* (optional) — requested only for the specific site you grant, with Chrome's per-site
confirmation
TESTING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Install this extension.
2. Install the companion helper (requires Node.js 22+) from the repository linked below.
3. Click the Chrome Tab Remote toolbar icon, grant the current tab, and connect an MCP client to
http://127.0.0.1:8917/mcp. A full walkthrough is in the "Try it yourself" section of the repository README.
