About Capisco: Auto Subtitles for Language Learning
Capisco means "I understand" in Italian. Learn a language by watching what you love: Capisco listens to the tab's audio and shows dual subtitles live, the original speech with its translation right under it. It works on videos that have no subtitles at all, and on live calls, so you can follow your online tutor or a meeting as it happens. Create your Library of new words and then export it to Anki or Quizlet - or learn directly from the extension.
BUILT FOR LEARNERS
• Original and translation together, in sync - read what you hear
• Missed something? Step back, pause or replay with the buttons in the overlay or the keys A, Space (or W) and S. While you catch up, the box shows what you already heard
• Steady text made for reading: words appear once and stay put, with no flicker or reshuffling mid-sentence
• Natural punctuation and breaks at real sentence ends, with smart breaks for Japanese, Chinese and Thai
• Uses the video's own subtitle track when there is one in your language: on YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video you get the exact written dialogue, translated as it plays, and a notice if the track does not match what is being said
• Click any word for its dictionary definition, pronunciation (IPA) and audio
• Save phrases and words to your Library in folders, each with the sentence it came from, or right-click a word to save it at once
• Send them to Anki in one click, or export a file for other flashcard apps
• History: search everything that was said and save transcripts
WORKS WHERE OTHER TOOLS STOP
• Any website: streaming, anime, lectures, podcasts and browser calls
• No subtitle file needed: the text is generated from the speech itself
• Binge-proof: start the next episode and it keeps going, no restart
• Private and free: with on-device recognition (the default wherever a model exists) the sound is processed on your computer and never leaves it; translation always runs locally. No account, no subscription. Where no on-device model exists, Chrome's cloud recognition is used - the overlay always shows which engine runs, and nothing switches silently
MAKE IT YOURS
• 1-3 lines, font size, background opacity, text outline
• Voice boost for dialogue buried under music
• A draggable overlay that also works in fullscreen
WHAT YOU CAN LEARN
70+ languages. Italian, Spanish, French, German, Japanese and a dozen more run with private on-device recognition; the full list is at capisco.io/languages
Requires Google Chrome 140 or newer: it uses Chrome's built-in speech recognition and translation, which other Chromium browsers do not include. The first start downloads the on-device models once.
