About Benkyu
Benkyu turns the Japanese you already read and watch into study material.
Turn Benkyu on for a site and every Japanese word on the page is marked by what you know: unknown, learning or known. Furigana appear only where you need them. A bar at the top shows how much of the page you understand and finds the sentences with exactly one new word, the best ones to learn from (i+1).
LOOK UP ANY WORD
• Hold Shift and point at a word, click it, or select it: the dictionary opens next to it.
• Readings, pitch accent, frequency and every sense from the Benkyu dictionaries.
• Hear the word and the whole sentence.
• Works offline once the dictionaries are downloaded.
MINE CARDS IN ONE CLICK
• "Add card" saves the word with its sentence, reading, pitch and meaning to your Benkyu decks; the pencil opens the full card form first.
• Cards are reviewed on the Benkyu website with spaced repetition (FSRS).
WATCH WITH JAPANESE SUBTITLES
• On YouTube and Netflix, Benkyu shows its own Japanese subtitles over the video, marked and clickable, with the full transcript in the side panel.
• Click a subtitle word to look it up; the video pauses.
• Cards from a video keep a picture of the scene and the audio of the line.
• Replay, previous and next line with the keyboard; optional pause at the end of each line.
TRACK YOUR IMMERSION
• Reading and watching time is counted while Benkyu is on and shows in your Benkyu stats.
