About Bebop: learn Japanese in every new tab
Drip feed yourself a little Japanese with each new tab, paired with manga-inspired artwork that brings each word to life.
Bebop is a visual dictionary and momentum for your Japanese practice.
• 13,901 illustrated words from N5 to N1, plus 320 more in an optional N1+ level for words beyond the exam.
• Read three Japanese example sentences for every word. The English stays blurred until you hover over a sentence, so you read the Japanese first.
• Click any word in an example sentence to open its own card, then use the arrow keys to come back.
• Words you have seen come back on a schedule, the way flashcard apps space their reviews: 10 minutes later, then after 1, 3, 7 and 16 days and longer. There is nothing to press.
• Choose any mix of levels, a new word in every tab or one word for the day.
• Show or hide readings and English independently, or hide just the reading of the word you are learning to test yourself.
• Put the word on the left, on the right or at the bottom, so it stays in view while you type in the address bar.
• Double-click to reveal translations and short kanji meanings.
• Words and sentences work offline. Pictures download a few cards ahead, so they appear straight away, and only about 9 MB of them is kept on your device.
Everything is free: every level, every word and every picture. No account, subscription or payment.
Levels follow Bebop's own JLPT word list. The JLPT has not published an official vocabulary list since 2010, so levels are approximate. How the list was made: https://bebopjapanese.com/jlpt-word-list. Most example sentences come from open corpora (Tatoeba, the Kyoto Wikipedia corpus and Wiktionary). Where no suitable sentence existed, the sentence or its English translation was written by AI; these are labelled in the sentence credits.
Bebop replaces Chrome’s New Tab page. Your preferences and review schedule stay on your device. Bebop does not read your browsing history or other websites, and contains no ads or analytics.
