About Auto Volume Normalizer
You know the pain: a quiet movie dialogue forces you to crank the volume, then an explosion or loud ad blasts your ears?
Auto Volume Normalizer automatically adjusts audio levels in your browser to make listening more comfortable. Auto Volume Normalizer automatically balances audio levels on any web page.
The extension uses the Web Audio API to measure audio loudness in real time and apply automatic gain control. All audio processing happens locally in your browser, with no cloud processing, tracking, or subscription.
No more reaching for the volume knob when quiet dialogue is followed by loud explosions.
# FEATURES
• Smart gain control — raises quiet passages to a target level without blowing out loud sections
• Dynamics compressor — optional smoothing of sudden loud transients (claps, gunshots, ads)
• 6 built-in presets — Balanced, TV/Movies, Music, Speech, Night Mode, Maximum Leveling
• Real-time debug panel — Ctrl+Shift+V shows live RMS, gain, element count
• Adjustable attack/release — fine-tune how fast the volume adapts
• Max boost limit — prevents amplifying background noise
• Works everywhere — YouTube, Twitch, Netflix*, news sites, podcasts, embedded players
• Zero config required — sensible defaults work out of the box
• Privacy-first — no data collection, all processing local
*Netflix and DRM-protected players limited by browser security.
# HOW IT WORKS
The extension uses the Web Audio API to build a real-time processing graph for each <audio> and <video> element:
1. Measures RMS loudness via AnalyserNode
2. Applies automatic gain compensation via GainNode
3. Optionally compresses peaks via DynamicsCompressorNode
# SETTINGS
• Target volume (-30 to -6 dB) — desired output level
• Max boost (0 to +30 dB) — safety ceiling for quiet audio
• Attack (20–250 ms) — response to quiet sections
• Release (150–1500 ms) — recovery from loud sections
• Compressor — toggle peak smoothing
# PRESETS
Balanced (-18 dB, +15 dB, 60/500 ms) — General use
TV / Movies (-14 dB, +24 dB, 30/400 ms) — Streaming (EBU R128)
Music (-16 dB, +12 dB, 50/600 ms) — Preserves dynamics
Speech (-10 dB, +20 dB, 20/300 ms) — Podcasts, dialogue
Night Mode (-24 dB, +18 dB, 80/800 ms) — Quiet viewing
Maximum (-6 dB, +30 dB, 20/300 ms) — Aggressive leveling
# GRAPHIC EQUALIZER
- 7-band graphic equalizer
- Peaking bands at 60/150/400/1k/2.4k/6k/15k Hz
- Presets (Flat / Bass Boost / Vocal / Treble)
# NOT WORKING, or is the debug-panel NOT VISIBLE?
Another extension (anti-spam / overlay cleaner / aggressive ad-blocker) may remove or hide third-party DOM nodes like #av-debug-panel in normal mode — fullscreen top-layer content is usually untouched, which is why the panel can still appear in fullscreen. Allowlist this extension in that tool (or pause it on the affected site) and reload the page.
