About ActivityWatch Web Watcher
ActivityWatch Web Watcher is a local, privacy-first browser extension that automatically logs your active tabs, web browsing time, and daily computer usage directly to your local ActivityWatch instance.
Designed for knowledge workers, developers, and researchers who want full clarity on where their time goes without surrendering their personal data to third-party cloud servers.
KEY FEATURES:
• Automatic Tab Tracking: Automatically detects when you switch tabs or visit new pages and updates your active work session.
• 100% Local & Private: All events and metrics are sent directly to your local ActivityWatch server (http://localhost:5600). Zero cloud transmission, zero telemetry, and zero tracking servers.
• Multi-Profile Friendly: Works across multiple Chrome profiles simultaneously, logging each profile to your central dashboard.
• Media & Audible Awareness: Recognizes when background tabs are producing audio (videos, meetings, music) to provide accurate contextual logging.
• Light on Resources: Built using modern Chrome Manifest V3 service workers for near-zero battery and CPU footprint.
HOW IT WORKS:
1. Ensure ActivityWatch (aw-server) is running on your computer.
2. Install this extension.
3. The extension connects to http://localhost:5600 and logs active web session durations into your `aw-watcher-web-chrome` bucket.
4. View comprehensive daily, weekly, and monthly productivity reports inside your ActivityWatch Web UI.
REQUIREMENTS:
Requires ActivityWatch running locally on your computer (available at https://activitywatch.net).
