Tired of ‘web designers’ thinking you’re too stupid to use your browser, forcing external links to open in new tabs instead of the current one?

This tiny extension deletes any [target="_blank"] or [target="_new"] attributes on all links in all pages. There’s a reason these attributes are deprecated in the HTML spec.

If you want to open a link in a new tab, YOU have the control: just a) middle-click, b) CTRL-click, or c) Right-click and select ‘Open link in new tab.’

Let me know if you discover any sites bypassing this extension, and I’ll see if I can give them a good slap as well.

The name is awful, by the way. If you can think of a better, more succinct one, let me know.

    I really like your view on this. If you ask me, it should be considered a security flaw, if websites can change the browsers behaviour.

    Great job.

    GMail can by pass this extension. Got o GMail, and click on e.g. Documents. GMail will then open Google Docs in a new tab.

    Google Documents has the same behaviour, and it looks to be an iFrame problem. I’m looking into it.

    That would be so great. The extension you are making here is really the most important tab feature I can think of.

    pLEEEEASSSEEEE…ability to set default behavior that rt click, open in new tab, causes the new tab to have the foreground focus. Best implementation would be to permit user to select as preference–
    -new tab opens with focus, or current tab retains focus
    -new tab opens at far right, or next to the current tab.

    Above would seem to cover all users no matter what their preference.

    Should have added: rt click with ctrl does the opposite of however preference currently set.

    I’m not sure if you can change it, but it seems like your extension removes these attributes only after page is fully loaded. When page is still loading, pressing a link with such attribute will open a page on the new tab.

    Anyway, nice extension, great work!

    You could call it ā€œNo forced new tabsā€. Sorry for my bad english, it’s not my first language.

    This extension is exactly what i NEED! I am currently using the latest version of CHROME 6 but it seems your extension doesnt work, my links are still opening in a new TAB each time. can you please assist?
