More about this extension

Flashblock is an extension for the Google Chrome that blocks all Flash content from loading. It then leaves placeholders on the webpage that allow you to click to download and then view the Flash content.

Supported whitelist (press Ctrl+Shift+F for adding a site) and saving flash/flash-video on Ctrl+Click.

Flashblock currently blocks the following content types:

  • Macromedia Flash
  • Macromedia Shockwave\
  • Macromedia Authorware
  • MS Silverlight

Flashblock used the rules from Flashblock for Firefox.

Change Log:

Added context menu with functions: "Disable FlashBlock", "Hide placeholders", "Copy flash address", "Copy flash-video address", "Download flash-video".

    Press Alt + F. And…Nothing happened….=.=

  2. Harlowe Thrombey says:

It didn’t work for me. But I don’t have the required version of Chrome? There is a disclaimer at the top that says “Extension Only Meant For Latest Developer Builds of Chrome 4.0+.” .

But the latest version most people have access to is 3.something.

    Author:
Chrome 4 has many new features for extensions. However you can use this extension if will run Chrome 3 with a switch –enable-extensions

  3. samfisher5986 says:

This works nicely for me, i’m running version 4.0.

The only problem is that some pages still don’t have flash blocked, its most likely just a bug that will be fixed in future versions.

    What is this page?

  4. Dominick says:

    Browsing on Chrome just 1up’d.

    Thanks a ton.

  5. Grasshopper says:

Works great with Chrome 4.0.220.1 Alt+F works to but it also opens the wrench menu. An separate option page/windows would and a way to manually add URLs to the white list would be nice. Does the extension support automatic update in it’s current version?

  6. Lex1 says:

    Added Ctrl+Shift+F

  7. ben2talk says:

Nice move – works fine with Chromium. Watch out Firefox :o

  8. Pappnese says:

Works fine on most pages, but it doesn’t block flash ads on http://www.dagbladet.no (Alt-F does nothing). Is there a manually editable whitelist? Chrome 4.0.221.8 on Mac OS X 10.6

  9. Cool plugin.

    Needs:
    - whitelist
    - visual confirmation of blocking / unblocking.
    - something under chrome://extensions/ so that I can ‘inspect’ the plugin.

  10. Unregistered says:

What’s with the big bar? Where are the visual flash confirmations? Terrible.

  11. Socrates says:

w00t!w00t!w00t! to the sound of Firefox screaming…

  12. Proctofantasmist says:

    Alt+F and Ctrl+Shift+F and Ctrl+click don’t work :(

    Win7 Ultimate + Chrome 4.0.223.11

  13. zee says:

So far so good, but if I press ALT + F for adding a site to whiltelist, what commands do I use to remove a site from the whitelist?

    Author:
    Once again, press this hotkey.

  14. ben says:

In some cases, hotmail still having flash ads.

  15. Alen Siljak says:

Chrome 4.0.223.16 on Windows XP. Nothing happens on either Alt+F (except opening the menu) or Ctrl+Shift+F, whether refreshing the page afterwards or not.
Tried on yahoo mail, http://www.flashiness.com/, and other random sites with flash animations.
What to do? Can’t stand Flash ads with sound when at work!

  16. Alen Siljak says:

Aaah, sorry. It actually works! My current development version of Chrome does not accept .crx extensions and, if added unpacked, extensions do not get loaded on browser restart.
Might need to do uninstall/reinstall of the browser but the extension works as expected. Thanks!

  17. Alen Siljak says:

Just a quick update – uninstalled Chrome, installed fresh from Dev channel and extensions now work. Cheers

  18. EverLearner says:

Works on Mac Google Chrome 4.0.223.11. Good Job and thanks!

  19. Henk says:

    This extension works perfectly!

  20. David says:

Most of the flash ads on mashable.com aren’t getting blocked, though some are. Using 4.0.228.0 on Linux. There’s also a non-blocked flash blackberry ad on this very page, with a blocked flash ad to the right of it. I haven’t noticed the issue on Windows yet.

  21. Yoav says:

The extension stopped working for me in the recent Chromium build. When installing, I’m getting an error “Content scripts can not be executed on file:// urls.”
According to http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=28175#c0 , file:// urls access is no longer supported for extensions (probably for security reasons).
Will the FlashBlock extension be repaired to avoid this issue?

    Thanks!

  22. DaVince says:

The download button isn’t even showing up for me on this page… Could someone give me a direct link? I’m running chromium-daily, so it should be there…

  23. Jim says:

Extension doesn’t seem to work. Tested on hardocp.com

The options button is greyed out in the Chrome Extensions menu, and there seem to be no configuration options anywhere for the extension itself.

    Any help would be appreciated!

  24. Lex1 says:

    > hardocp.com

    http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://hardocp.com/;verbose=1
    Validation Output: 314 Errors

On this site it’s impossible to block only the flash.

  25. myself says:

You say it’s GPL, but source code is no available. How the people know it has no troyans then?

    Author:
    Use 7Zip, dude.

  26. Gorch says:

It seems, the extention is not working, when flash element is inside IFRAME tag, like on the site Pappnese said about.

  27. avatara9 says:

    AWESOME!
    I love google ))

  28. DaVince says:

The extension only works half. Any ad that’s invoked through JavaScript seems to be just allowed. The rest is blocked, though.

    Please fix.

  29. Lex1 says:

    Fixed.

  30. Igor says:

    Hey, Lex,

Is it possible to make a button for this plugin to be available on the toolbar?

  31. Lex1 says:

The button will take too much space for such a seldom-used functions.

  32. Insurge says:

Works great! Only problem is alt+f hotkey opens the tools menu instead of unblocking flash on the sites! Keep up the great work and please add a whitelist in future versions.

  33. KinG_ says:

lol rly tnx, i hate wn i go to a web and need to slow my net because the 100mb SWF o.O”
tnx a lot, great work !

  34. Jason says:

Lex1, would you consider adding a second keybinding for saving the flash video? On Mac’s Control-click pulls up the Flash menu. Could you add Option-click or Command-Click to download the video?

    Thanks

  35. Vijayp says:

    Hi Lex1,
Thanks for the good work. Where can I find the souce code for this? It’s supposedly GPL, and I’l like to help by fixing a few bugs.

  36. Jason says:

    It looks like the line:

    if(!ev.shiftKey && ev.ctrlKey && !ev.altKey && src){

    would have to change to

    if(!ev.shiftKey && (ev.ctrlKey || ev.metaKey) && !ev.altKey && src){

to support the mac command-key instead of control key.

  37. Lex1 says:

    > Lex1, would you consider adding a second keybinding for saving the flash video?
    Added. And context menu, too.

    > Thanks for the good work. Where can I find the souce code for this?
    Just unzip flashblock.crx.

  38. banggo says:

    Thanks! great extension. =)

  39. gfan says:

    great extension
and if i change the hot key?
ctrl+alt i’ll change the typing language by mistakes

  40. Ven says:

    Works great !

I accidentally clicked on “Hide Placeholders on …” for a site (instead of “Disable Flashblock on …”). How do I undo it ?

    Thanks

  41. Petee says:

    I works fine on 4.0.249.43
    Thanks for the extension! :-)

  42. DeathStalker says:

Why do I get the warning that “This extensions will have access to your private data on all websites” why I try to install it?

This, needless to say, is clearly cause for concern and should be an issue clearly declared in the software description/write-up.

    Thank you for any explanation.

  43. Hi. The extension is great and works perfectly, except for one thing: on Google Reader, I have some feeds which usually have embedded videos (like failblog). The problem is, I don’t even see a clickable image on these feeds to activate the flash. It’s just not there. Also, you should add a way to manage which sites we have blocked on the extension options.

  44. Josh Meredith says:

This extension is great, before I installed it all those annoying ads were hogging my netbook’s CPU and killing it’s battery, now my CPU is nice and idle.

  45. Owen says:

Where is the white list data stored? Is there a way to remove a site from the white list once it is added?

That’s the only problem I have with it: no way to edit the white list. Once a site is added, can’t remove it later.

  46. Zakuska2001 says:

    Giga thanks!!!!!!!!!!
It is fine! My brain remains whole thanks to you!!!

  47. salju003 says:

    It work nice and smooth
it doesn’t work on private browsing mode
but, well done, keep improving it

  48. A Noniem says:

Works smooth as far as i can tell on 5.0.332.2 develepor build on Ubuntu 9.04.

  49. Matt Williams says:

Just installed this – works perfectly after 10 second installation process…..
Tried it out on itv-f1 website – notorious for loads of flash ads (up to three at a time!)

    Highly recommended!

  50. Dr.Sid says:

Does not block new embed YouTube videos.
